Tallinn is becoming increasingly expensive, while wages and the cost of living remain deeply out of balance. Small eateries often appear and disappear quickly, trying to make it through the month. While the system encourages large chains businesses that are gradually dominating the landscape. Eating out becomes less.
Kartul began as a response to the city around us.
We are a family and friends run neighbourhood kitchen and social enterprise, built and run mainly through our own savings, labour, and time to keep this space open. And we need your support too.
This is not a for-profit project. It comes from a simple but urgent wish: to keep space open for shared meals, public gatherings, and forms of community. We work with the idea of community nutrition by providing socially and environmentally sustainable food, while also hosting events and making room for the ordinary forms of being together that are becoming harder to sustain in Tallinn.

Alongside food and socio-educational events, Kartul also makes room for small projects run by other people. Around the space, you will find initiatives that are growing step by step, including a grocery shelf by Sabawoon, came to Estonia from Afghanistan and is building something of his own here, and his shelf is one part of the wider ecology of the space.
We add: 24% VAT + further 10–20% contribution (with their consent) to help cover the costs of sustaining the space.
We want Kartul to be for everyone in the community to use. Please get in touch if you want to use the space for a public event. For non-profit open gatherings we host the space for free.
The space fits comfortably around 16 people and comes with a projector and screen, as well as tables and chairs that can be rearranged to suit different kinds of gatherings.
