Inbetween the Global Catalogue: Australian Experimental Animation

The Australian footnotes of experimental animation are easily overlooked. Much has been acknowledged for the work of Len Lye (although New Zealand born, he worked extensively in Australia) but in the decades thereafter, many independent and experimental animation works have shared only a soft presence in the experimental animation lineage.

At Kartul, Jenn and Dane are ecstatic to show you my program of the small treasures in Australian experimental animation. Experimental animation in Australia has changed so much since the 60s, arguably in step with technology, but more significantly, through seismic shifts in state and academic funding for work outside the industrial/commercial complex.

On Monday, 14th of September 2026, join to view the works that sit in-between the global catalogue. To see the new, formative and legacy works spanning over 40 years from Australia.

This night will begin with a shared vegan dinner cooked by Jenn and Dane! Come hungry :)
